Using Naxos Music Library

Standard Search

  • browse the entire library by Genre, from A-Z
  • browse the Classical genre by Category (below the Genre column) and Letter of the Alphabet (below the upper toolbar). If you're looking for a specific work in a specific category, this may be faster than using Advanced Search
  • search by composer. For example, click Composers in the Category column, click the letter with which the name of the composer starts, and then choose the composition you're looking for from the discography.

Advanced Search

  • Genre and Music Categories - A list of all genres and categories can be found by clicking the icon.
  • Composer / Arranger / Lyricist - Russian and Chinese Composer Names
are transcribed from Kyrillic and Chinese characters and are not always spelled consistently.
  • Catalogue Number / Disc Title / Composition Title - If you know the catalogue number of the CD you looking for, enter it here.
  • Period - Search for works by composers belonging to specific periods in music history.
  • Contemporary: Living Composers - Produce a list of works by composers who composed the bulk of their output during these years.
  • Country - Enter the country of birth of the composer or lyricist you are looking for in this field.
  • Year Composed - Find works composed during a particular period, for example between 1840 and 1920.

Playing a CD

  • Click the title of the CD you want to play. A new window containing the track list, CD cover and control buttons will appear.
  • Select the tracks you want to listen to by clicking the Select All button or the boxes next to the tracks.
  • Click Play Selections to begin playing the selected tracks.
  • Individual users do not have the ability to create their own playlists. Students can only listen to playlists.

Note: The "fast forwarding" function should work in Windows browsers, such as IE 6.0, but the function is disabled in Macintosh for some browsers eg Safari.

Selecting and Changing the Sound Quality

The default setting is the 64Kbps/Near-CD Quality. The lower quality setting 20 Kbps/FM sound is suitable for use over slower internet connections. The highest setting (128 Kbps/CD quality) is not available under our subscription agreement.

If you need to change the quality, because the music only streams intermittently (almost always caused by inadequate bandwidth/speed) or because you do not have access to broadband, click on the FM Quality button before selecting the music you want to play. If you want to change the quality while the music is playing, click the Stop button on the Media Player, click the FM Quality button and then click Play Selections. Follow the same procedure when switching from a lower quality to a higher quality.

About this Recording

While listening, you can access information on the recording by clicking About this Recording (not available for all titles). You may print out the notes by clicking Print.

Problems

Please check that your browser settings comply with the requirements above.

If you see a login screen on Naxos Music Library, even if you have already logged in through the Library remote access screen, this is because we have exceeded our maximum number of simultaneous users (five). You will need to try again later.

Intermittent Streaming

  • Your bandwidth is inadequate or unstable [can happen during peak hours at night]. Try switching from Near CD Quality [64Kbps] to FM Quality [20Kbps], which uses less bandwidth.
  • Your computer's Internet connection will determine the streaming rate you can choose. A higher Internet bandwidth means you can choose a better sound quality. The minimum requirements are: Broadband for 128Kbps streaming (CD quality); DSL or ISDN for 64Kbps streaming (near CD quality); Dial-up connection for 20Kbps streaming (FM quality)

Cannot play this track

  • If this message appears after having clicked "Play Selections", it is likely that you don't have Windows Media Player 9.0. Download this latest version of the Windows Media Player.
